Abstract
In this proposed project, a model curriculum on the incorporation of Deaf culture in the art curricula of mainstream schools for deaf and hard of hearing students will be developed. It will recognize the importance of practicing cultural sensitivity and relevancy while adhering to the National, State, and District wide standards for art education within mainstream education.
There is a growing population of Deaf and hard of hearing students who define themselves as multi-cultural in the United States and this growth requires a review of current curricula to ensure that it will encompass their multi-cultural perspectives and backgrounds. In order to construct a new model curriculum product, such as a website for future educators as a resource, the first step is to collect as many of the current art curricula and resources that are available and documenting the standards for Art Education for both hearing and Deaf and hard of hearing students.
A review of the literature will identify the main themes, note the occurrences of multicultural perspectives, Deaf and others, and list the main areas of concern. Then the data collected will be utilized to create a new type of curricula made available for access on a website as a new resource for art teachers.
Goals
This website is designed to perform as a resource for art classroom teachers who currently or will have deaf and hard of hearing students in their classroom as well as those who are interested in learning more about Deaf culture and how art instruction can spread awareness and promote it. Many Deaf and hard of hearing students are not exposed to many opportunities to discover what it means to be Deaf with a capital 'D' and what Deaf culture involves due to a variety of factors that include but are not limited to: hearing families with no awareness of Deaf culture, no local community involving Deaf and hard of hearing individuals and Deaf/hh role model.
In this respect, the structure of an art classroom in addition to other humanities such as English and Social Studies, provides many opportunities for the history of Deaf culture and other cultural backgrounds to be taught and for the student to become an active participant in discovering who they are as an individual within a multi-cultural world.
A final goal of this website is to be an open resource to not only working professionals who teach art and other courses, but also for any person who is interested in learning more about how to integrate the multi-cultural perspectives and backgrounds that many Deaf and hard of hearing students come from into their lives.
Multicultural Education: refers to any form of education or teaching that incorporates the histories, texts, values, beliefs, and perspectives of people from different cultural backgrounds.
